This 1718 work by Alexandre‑François Desportes offers a fascinating look at 18th century hunting art. Desportes originally trained as a portrait artist, but soon gained a reputation for his ability to capture dogs and game with striking realism.
By the early 18th century, Desportes had secured royal patronage, being commissoned by both Louis XIV and Louis XV to paint portraits of their favorite hunting dogs, and works which would adorn royal houses, such as Versailles.
Desportes also become a recorder of royal hunts, following the king's hunting party with a small notebook, and making sketches - which the king would choose from to become finished paintings.

Artwork hung over furniture looks best at about 75% of its width, with the bottom edge approximately 6-12 inches above the furniture.

The only exception to this rule is when you're hanging your art piece over the fireplace. In this case, it's best to choose a print which is either the same length as the mantle, or the same width as the fireplace opening.
When hanging art on an empty wall, utilize the three-eights rule, leaving empty space which amounts to about three-eights the width of the painting on each side of the wall.
